On the way to Tangier, their car plunges into the Port of Algeciras: two women die

The accident occurred at around 00:30 at quay number 1 of the Muelle de Galera. According to EFE, the four travelers had passed through the National Police checkpoint before being directed to an area where they were to wait for boarding.

For a reason that remains undetermined, the car did not stop at the indicated location. It continued on until it reached the edge of the quay, then fell directly into the sea.

Initial findings suggest a possible error or distraction on the part of the driver. There was reportedly thick fog covering the port at the time of the tragedy, which may have contributed to disorienting the motorist. The investigation must still determine precisely what happened.

The Port of Algeciras is the main Spanish boarding gateway to Tanger Med for travelers by car. During the busiest periods of Marhaba, thousands of vehicles pass through it every day.

The two men who were in the front of the vehicle managed to get out of the car after it fell into the water. Both were injured.

One of them, an elderly man, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The driver was also treated by emergency services.

The two women remain trapped in the car

The two women seated in the rear, however, were unable to leave the vehicle. The car quickly sank into the water, and they remained trapped inside the passenger compartment.

Divers from the Civil Guard’s Special Underwater Activities Group (GEAS) intervened to extract them. The two women were already dead when their bodies could be recovered.

The operation mobilized significant resources: the Civil Guard, Salvamento Marítimo, the National Police, port police, firefighters and 061 medical services.

The tragedy occurred at the end of a particularly busy period for connections between Spain and Morocco. Algeciras and Tanger Med again saw significant movements of travelers and vehicles in recent weeks, as part of Operation Marhaba 2026.

An accident with certain similarities had already cast mourning over a Strait crossing in 2017: an MRE died after his car fell into the water in Ceuta as he was disembarking from a ferry coming from Algeciras.

In this night’s accident, the Spanish authorities have for now disclosed neither the identities nor the nationalities of the four occupants. They are now seeking to understand why their vehicle, while heading toward the boarding area for Tangier, continued on until it fell into the port.
