The Marrakech–Agadir high-speed train leaves the announcement stage: expropriations can begin

The high-speed train between Marrakech and Agadir has reached a decisive milestone. The government has just declared its construction to be in the public interest, thereby paving the way for the acquisition and expropriation of land located along its route.

The decision is set out in Decree No. 2.26.605, signed on September 1 by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and published on September 7 in the Official Bulletin of the Kingdom of Morocco.

The text officially establishes that the public interest requires the construction of a railway line for high-speed trains between Marrakech and Agadir. The project must follow the route defined in a 1:50,000 location plan annexed to the original decree.

This publication now makes it possible to begin securing the land for the future railway line. The necessary land may be acquired or expropriated under Moroccan law on expropriation for public purposes and temporary occupation.

The project had been discussed for several years, but mainly through technical studies, route scenarios and journey-time estimates. The decree now gives it a legal basis for concretely preparing the land.

The future line is intended to extend the high-speed network toward southern Morocco and put Agadir on the high-speed rail map. The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, had announced a Marrakech–Agadir journey of approximately one hour, compared with more than three hours by road at present.

The government is thus bringing the project into its land-acquisition phase, an essential prerequisite for launching major construction works. The selected route will determine the plots to be cleared and the land required for the track, stations and technical facilities.

The decree does not yet disclose the construction schedule or the line’s opening date. It nevertheless confirms that the Marrakech–Agadir high-speed train now has its public-interest framework and that land procedures can begin.

Implementation of the decision has been entrusted to the Minister of Transport and Logistics.
