High-Speed Train Marrakech Agadir Financing Milestone

The extension of the high-speed train between Marrakech and Agadir reaches a decisive milestone. With finalized studies and a budget estimated at 55 billion dirhams, Morocco is seeking international financing to cross the High Atlas.

The realization of this second high-speed section promises to be a genuine technical challenge. While identification and implementation studies are now completely finalized, they confirm the extreme complexity of the route that will have to face the steep terrain of the High Atlas. During a session at the Chamber of Representatives, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, detailed the nature of these major works. These complex projects "represent nearly 70% of bridge and tunnel construction," covering a distance of more than 35 kilometers.

Such infrastructure inevitably requires heavy investments. According to the latest data, the budget needed to connect the ochre city to the capital of Souss reaches nearly 55 billion dirhams. Faced with this colossal amount, Moroccan authorities are turning to foreign partners to realize this extension of the railway network. The minister assured that the National Railway Office (ONCF) and his department are currently "focused on seeking financing at the global level."
