Morocco’s High-Speed Rail Expansion: Marrakech-Agadir Line Study Nears Completion

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, stated during the oral questions session at the House of Representatives that the preliminary study regarding the construction of the railway line between Marrakech and Agadir would be completed within three months.
According to the information provided by the minister, the main objective of this preliminary study is to determine the financial cost associated with the construction of this new railway infrastructure.
Abdessamad Kayouh specified that once this evaluation is completed and the application study is finished, the ministry would initiate steps to seek the necessary funding, considering both national and international funding sources to cover the implementation costs.
In parallel with these technical and financial studies, preparatory actions are already underway on the ground. The government official emphasized that the ministry is currently acquiring land for the project. This includes a right-of-way of about 8 kilometers at the exit of Marrakech and an area of more than 60 hectares near the Adrar stadium, at the entrance of Agadir.
The minister also reminded that the link between Casablanca and Marrakech should be completed by 2029. Nevertheless, he affirmed that the progress of this first project did not prevent the continuation of the study for the Marrakech-Agadir link, envisioned as a high-speed line passing through Essaouira.
