Morocco Plans High-Speed Rail Extension to Agadir for 2030 World Cup

Morocco is seriously considering extending its high-speed line to Agadir, host city of the 2030 Football World Cup. Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics, recently announced that the preliminary study of this ambitious project would be finalized in mid-2025.
This 240-kilometer section, connecting Marrakech to Agadir, should cost around 50 billion dirhams and require the construction of 37 kilometers of tunnels. A major challenge for the Kingdom, which aims to complete the work before the 2030 World Cup kickoff. To achieve this, the Moroccan authorities will have to step up the pace and launch the expropriation procedures and technical studies as soon as possible.
This project is part of a broader desire to develop the national rail network. The objective? To bring the number of TGVs to 30, compared to 12 currently, and strengthen the fleet of TNR conventional trains and RER regional trains.
If the project materializes, travelers will be able to travel from Tangier to Marrakech in 2 hours 40 minutes and from Marrakech to Agadir in only 1 hour. Travel times between the other major cities of the country will also be considerably reduced. For example, it will only take 1 hour 40 to connect Tangier to Casablanca and 1 hour 15 to make the Casablanca-Marrakech journey.
