Essaouira will indeed get its TGV: Morocco officially confirms the line

Essaouira will indeed appear on Morocco’s high-speed rail map. A decree published in the Official Bulletin confirms the construction of a TGV line between Chichaoua and the coastal city and paves the way for expropriations.

Decree No. 2.26.605, signed on September 1 by Aziz Akhannouch and published on September 7 in the Official Bulletin of the Kingdom of Morocco, explicitly classifies the future Chichaoua-Essaouira connection as a railway line “for high-speed trains.”

The government declares its construction to be in the public interest. The route is defined in a 1:50,000-scale plan attached to the decree, making it possible to initiate the necessary acquisitions and expropriations.

This publication removes uncertainty about the nature of the connection, which was sometimes presented as a conventional line linked to Chichaoua. The official text confirms that it will indeed be intended for high-speed trains.

Chichaoua, the TGV junction toward Essaouira

The line is to connect Essaouira to the network running through Marrakech and Chichaoua. The latter will become the junction point toward the Atlantic coast.

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, had announced a Marrakech-Essaouira journey reduced to about one hour, compared with more than two and a half hours by road. The decree now gives the project its public-interest framework.

Essaouira, which currently has no rail service, is thus entering the land-acquisition phase of its future TGV. The decree does not yet set the date for the works or for the start of operations.
