Theft at a Tanger clinic: nurses suspected of replacing gold jewelry with fakes
A judicial investigation has been opened in Tanger concerning the theft of jewelry of which an elderly woman would have been the victim, while she was hospitalized in a private clinic in the city center. The case, which would involve members of the medical staff, is causing a strong controversy over patient safety.
According to the first information, a group of nurses is suspected of having taken advantage of the victim’s weakened state, hospitalized on the fifth floor, to steal several gold jewelry pieces from her during her sleep. The alleged perpetrators would then have replaced the authentic jewelry with metal imitations, in order to conceal the theft.
The subterfuge was discovered by a member of the patient’s family, who noticed the deception and immediately alerted the management of the clinic. Faced with what the family describes as a lack of reaction from the establishment, they decided to contact the police directly. A judicial brigade went to the scene and opened a thorough investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office, summoning several employees to take their statements.
A clinic already at the heart of criticism
The suspects would continue to perform their duties, while other sources mention an attempt by the management to cover up the case to protect the reputation of the establishment. This is not the first serious incident to affect this clinic: a few weeks earlier, a patient had tried to commit suicide by jumping from the fifth floor.
These events revive the criticism of citizens regarding the internal management and supervision in private establishments in Tanger. Observers in the health sector believe that the repetition of such incidents highlights the need to strengthen control mechanisms and protect the rights of patients, who also complain of overcharging and lack of transparency.
