A new call sets September 20 for a “march of anger” over Ceuta, putting Spain on alert

Messages that appeared on Moroccan social networks in early September are calling for a “popular march” on Sunday, September 20, to demand the “liberation” of Ceuta, Melilla and the Spanish islets off the coast of Morocco. Other posts refer to a “march of anger” in Rabat toward the Spanish embassy.

According to El Español, the campaign is now being monitored by the CNI, CIFAS, National Police and Guardia Civil. “We are on the matter; we are going to control it,” security sources told the Spanish daily.

Spanish services are seeking in particular to identify the people behind the messages and determine whether the mobilization will remain virtual or could lead to actual movements. The poster circulated in Arabic does not currently mention any official organizer, authorization or precise route.

The date is not insignificant. September 20 falls in the middle of the campaign for Morocco’s September 23 legislative elections. Analysts specializing in disinformation consider the period from September 10 to 23 particularly sensitive, although they have no evidence allowing them to attribute the current campaign to the Moroccan authorities.

Spanish services monitor the possible move from social networks to the streets

The alert is being taken seriously because of the events of July 30 and 31, when more than 72,000 people had crossed the border into Ceuta. The National Police report submitted to the National Court has since described this mobilization as planned and extensively coordinated on social networks.

This precedent is now prompting Spanish services to monitor new calls at a very early stage. The CNI had already reported a mobilization near the border before the mass crossings in July, a warning that has become one of the sensitive points in the investigation opened in Spain.

Several Moroccan profiles with large audiences have relayed the new campaign. Journalist and commentator Mustapha Elasri is notably among them. Similar calls have generated thousands of interactions and use the slogan “All together for Ceuta.”
