Morocco Weather Alert: Intense Rain and Strong Winds This Weekend

The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level warning bulletin for this weekend. Heavy thunderstorms and powerful wind gusts are affecting several regions of the Kingdom this Saturday, with the disturbance continuing until Sunday morning.

Umbrellas and caution are essential. An active low-pressure system is crossing Morocco, bringing difficult weather conditions across a large part of the country.

For this Saturday, the severe weather will intensify from midday. From 12h00 today until Sunday 06h00, significant rainfall totals (40 to 70 mm) are expected in the north of the country, specifically affecting the provinces of Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Kénitra, Ouezzane, Tétouan and Larache.

Over the same period, rainfall ranging from 30 to 40 mm will water a wide area including the Casablanca-Rabat axis (Benslimane, Berrechid, Mediouna, Nouaceur, Salé, Skhirat-Témara), as well as Tanger-Assilah, M’Diq-Fnideq, and inland areas (Fès, Meknès, Ifrane, Khénifra, Béni Mellal).

Warning of violent winds

Wind will be the other major risk factor of the day. Gusts ranging from 75 to 85 km/h will sweep through:

• All day (from 06h00 to 23h00): L’Oriental, the North and mountainous areas (Oujda-Angad, Tanger, Tétouan, Al Hoceima, Midelt, Ifrane, Ouarzazate, etc.).

• From this afternoon (from 15h00 to 23h00): The Atlantic plains, affecting Rabat, Casablanca, Mohammedia and El Jadida.

This rainy and windy episode began yesterday, Friday, already affecting several provinces in the Rif and the Moyen Atlas.
