Weather alert in Morocco: Torrential rains, snow and freezing cold

Get your umbrellas and coats ready, the weekend is going to be turbulent. The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has placed several regions of the Kingdom on orange alert. On the program for this Saturday to Monday: heavy thunderstorms, abundant snowfall on the reliefs and a wave of polar cold.

The weather is deteriorating seriously. An active disturbance is crossing the country, bringing potentially dangerous rains. The North is particularly targeted: between Saturday 3:00 PM and Sunday evening, impressive accumulations of 40 to 70 mm are expected in Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Larache or even Al Hoceima.

Further south, the provinces of Agadir, Taroudant and Essaouira will not be spared, with thunderstorms (40-55 mm) accompanied by hail as early as this Saturday morning. The major cities like Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech will also experience sustained rainfall (25 to 40 mm).

Return of snow and temperatures down to -7 °C

Winter is also setting in at altitude. The DGM announces snowfall (10 to 30 cm) beyond 1,500 meters, covering the reliefs of the High and Middle Atlas as well as the Rif (Ifrane, Azilal, Al Haouz, Midelt...).

Beware also of black ice: the mercury will drop drastically. Temperatures oscillating between -07 and -03 °C are expected on Saturday and Sunday in the mountainous areas. Finally, the wind will blow hard on Sunday (up to 85 km/h) in the north and the Midelt region, calling for the utmost vigilance on the roads.
