Weather alert: storms, snow and strong winds expected this Sunday and Monday

Get out your umbrellas and bundle up. The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange alert bulletin this Sunday, announcing a significant deterioration in atmospheric conditions. Thunderstorms, snowfall in the highlands and gusts of wind are expected in several Moroccan regions until Monday morning.

The bulletin specifies that locally heavy thunderstorms, with accumulations ranging from 30 to 50 mm, will hit from this Sunday at 12pm until Monday 10am. The provinces affected by these heavy rains are Kénitra, Sidi Kacem, Ouezzane, Sidi Slimane, Taounate, Ifrane, Al Hoceima, Beni Mellal, Taza, Khénifra, Chefchaouen, Tanger-Assilah and Larache. At the same time, more moderate rains (15 to 25 mm) will drench Casablanca, Rabat, Salé and Meknès, as well as the regions of El Jadida, Settat, Tétouan and Khouribga.

Winter is also setting in at high altitudes. Snowfall ranging from 10 to 30 cm will blanket the peaks above 1,500 meters in altitude. This phenomenon will affect a vast mountainous area from Azilal to Al Hoceima, passing through Ifrane, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Boulemane, Khénifra, Chichaoua, Taroudant, Chefchaouen, Beni Mellal and Tinghir.

Finally, caution is advised, especially on the roads, as the wind will blow hard. Powerful gusts of 70 to 75 km/h are specifically forecast for this Sunday from 12pm to 11pm. The provinces exposed to these turbulences are Ifrane, Beni Mellal, Tinghir, Taroudant, Sefrou, Khénifra, Midelt and Ouarzazate.
