Orange Alert: Morocco Faces a Polar Cold Wave (-9 degrees)

Significant snowfall is expected above 1,400 meters in altitude with accumulations reaching 35 to 80 cm in the provinces of Al Haouz, Azilal and Chichaoua. Other regions such as Midelt, Ifrane, Ouarzazate or Al Hoceima will record accumulations between 15 and 35 cm from 1,300 meters. The massifs located between 1,200 and 1,500 meters in the provinces of Driouech, Figuig or Tiznit will also be affected by accumulations ranging from 10 to 15 cm until Monday morning.

At the same time, showers, sometimes thunderstorms, will affect a large part of the territory, including the Rabat-Casablanca, Tangier, Kenitra axes and several provinces of the interior such as Khouribga or Beni Mellal. Rainfall totals should fluctuate between 20 and 40 mm between this Friday evening and Saturday, January 17. These precipitations will also affect mountainous areas such as Azilal, Al Haouz and Khénifra.

An intense cold wave will set in from Sunday, January 18 until Tuesday, January 20 in the high-altitude areas and high plateaus. Minimum temperatures should drop between -9°C and -3°C in the provinces of Tinghir, Midelt, Boulemane, Ifrane, Azilal and Ouarzazate. This drop in temperature will also affect the provinces of Sefrou, Guercif, Taza, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Beni Mellal and Khénifra during this period.

The DGM specifies that the disturbances should gradually subside from the middle of next week throughout the country.
