Morocco’s Tetouan Airport to Get New Runway in $28 Million Upgrade

The Saniat R’mel airport in Tetouan will be equipped with a new runway to replace the old one, which is heavily disrupted by construction. It will be operational from the second half of 2022.
At a total cost of 285.5 million dirhams, the construction of the airport infrastructure will require installation and access preparation work, the realization of a 3D survey by dynamic 3D laser scanning for the aeronautical pavements before and after the completion of the work, the reinforcement of the existing taxiways, the reinforcement of the aircraft parking lot, as well as the implementation of the drainage solution, according to ONDA.
The objective of this project, says l’Économiste, is to allow Tetouan airport to expand its capacity and opt for larger aircraft with direct connections to several European capitals, the newspaper notes, recalling that the current 2300-meter runway is limited in its capacity.
Moreover, the newspaper has highlighted the crucial importance of this airport in the tourist region of Tetouan. According to the figures, this summer, the traffic at Saniat Rmel experienced one of the highest growth rates in the region’s traffic, with more than 133% compared to the same period in 2019.
This performance is attributable to Moroccans living abroad from the region who have been able to take advantage of the direct flights to the main European capitals, facilitating travel.
