Morocco Quran Translation MRE Diaspora Program

Moroccans residing abroad can receive free copies of the Quran translated into three European languages during their holidays in Morocco. The scheme covers French, Spanish and English, languages widely used by new generations of MREs.

The operation is organized by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs as part of a summer program that continues until August 20, 2026. It accompanies the return to Morocco of thousands of families established in Europe and other regions of the world.

The distributed works are copies of the "المصحف المحمدي", the Moushaf Mohammedi, including a translation of the meaning of the verses. The objective is to allow children and young people who are less fluent in Arabic to access the religious text in the language they use daily.

Distribution must notably be ensured in cities welcoming many MREs, as well as at several entry points to the kingdom. Information and guidance spaces have been set up in ports and airports, particularly at Tanger Med and Mohammed V airport in Casablanca.

The Quran translated for new generations

This linguistic dimension occupies a central place in the operation. Many children of MREs were born and grew up in France, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands or the United Kingdom. Some speak Darija or Amazigh at home, but struggle to read classical Arabic.

The French translation can thus concern a large part of families established in France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada. The Spanish version specifically targets Moroccans living in Spain, while the English edition addresses families settled in English-speaking countries.

According to the ministry, this distribution is part of a broader program of religious guidance for Moroccans worldwide. In total, 70 Quranic centers are mobilized across the kingdom.

The program also includes 438 religious and cultural activities organized between July 20 and August 20. Quranic memorization courses are offered to children of the diaspora, as well as a recitation and chanting competition.

Part of the program will also accompany the celebration of National Migrant Day, organized each year on August 10. MREs can find out about activities from local councils of scholars present in different provinces.

For religious leaders, translation should help maintain a link with younger generations without ignoring their linguistic reality. It offers them an explanation of the text in a language they understand, while bringing them closer to the Moroccan religious model.
