Morocco’s New Prime Minister Akhannouch Seeks Agadir Mayoral Role

Aziz Akhannouch, president of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), also the new head of government, officially filed his candidacy for the presidency of the Agadir municipality on Tuesday, September 14.
Aziz Akhannouch is the official candidate for the presidency of the Agadir municipality. On Tuesday, the RNI boss filed his candidacy with the city’s prefecture. The organic law on municipalities allows the new head of government - appointed by King Mohammed VI - to combine the prime ministership with the mayor’s office.
The RNI obtained 28 seats out of 61 in the last municipal elections. With these results and the party’s negotiating skills, Aziz Akhannouch could become the next mayor of Agadir. Moreover, he already sees himself as mayor of Agadir and head of government.
