Morocco’s New Prime Minister Akhannouch Elected Mayor of Agadir

Without any great surprise and without any difficulty, Aziz Akhannouch was elected mayor of Agadir. As the sole candidate, the recently appointed head of government by King Mohammed VI, he was unanimously elected, garnering the 51 votes of the Municipal Council.
By filing his application last Tuesday, September 14, at the Agadir Pachalik, to become mayor of the Municipality he led between 2003 and 2009 Aziz Akhannouch knew he was going into conquered territory. In the municipal elections of September 8 in Agadir, the RNI had largely come out on top, with 29 seats out of the 51 on the council.
It is therefore not surprising that the newly elected Agadir municipal council has placed Aziz Akhannouch, the sole candidate, at the head of the municipality. Legally, nothing prevents the new mayor from carrying out his duties as Head of Government.
