Morocco’s King Appoints Aziz Akhannouch as New Prime Minister After Election Win

King Mohammed VI received in audience this Friday, September 10, 2021 at the Royal Palace in Fez, Aziz Akhannouch, president of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), who came out on top in the legislative elections of September 8.
In a statement, the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery announced that Aziz Akhannouch, president of the RNI, has been appointed head of government by King Mohammed VI, who has tasked him with forming the new government.
The RNI came out on top in the September 8 legislative elections, with 102 seats. Aziz Akhannouch thus replaces El Othmani whose party (PJD) only won 13 seats.
According to the provisions of Article 47 of the Constitution, "The King appoints the Head of Government from within the political party that has won the most seats in the elections of the members of the House of Representatives, and in view of their results, on the proposal of the Head of Government, he appoints the members of the government".
