Moroccan Political Leader Aims for Dual Role as Agadir Mayor and Prime Minister

The president of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Aziz Akhannouch, says he is able to combine the functions of mayor of Agadir and president of the government if his party emerges victorious from the September 8 elections.
"We have concrete ideas and ambitions for Agadir and we are capable of unleashing the necessary synergies and skills to carry them out," said Aziz Akhannouch in an interview with Jeune Afrique. The candidate attaches importance to the development of the city. "The choice of Agadir came naturally. The future of this city is close to my heart, no doubt because our family has always lived there and it is a city to which we are particularly attached," he said.
When asked about a possible participation in a new government led by the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), Aziz Akhannouch refuses "to consider scenarios that go against the party," the ambition of the RNI being to win the elections. The party has recently emerged victorious from the elections of the professional chambers. This victory "is not necessarily a guarantee of success for September 8... it is nevertheless a source of satisfaction for us," nuanced the RNI boss.
Regarding the financing of the party’s program, the RNI will have to mobilize 275 billion dirhams. The candidate specified that the expenses will be spread over the duration and that the financing will depend on the resources mobilized by the state budget. He reassures that there will be no question of a tax increase.
