On a global scale, the rate of misrouted baggage reaches 9.12 per 1,000 passengers on international routes, compared to 1.65 on domestic flights. The culprits: connections, transfers between airlines, tight layovers and the multiplication of handlers at airports.

SITA identifies connections as the main source of baggage delays. Transfer problems account for 39% of incidents. For passengers traveling to Morocco, the risk therefore increases especially when the journey includes a tight connection.

The situation is improving, however: baggage incidents declined in 2025. But to avoid unpleasant surprises, the direct flight remains the safest choice, when possible.
