Moroccan Man Dies After 4-Month Coma Following Brutal Assault in Majorca

The brother of Mohamed Youb, the young Moroccan attacked in July in Cales de Mallorca and who died in November at the Son Espases hospital, recounts how the latter fought against death during these four months of care.

Mohamed Youb, 28, had been violently assaulted by a group of individuals in a parking lot on July 21 in Cales de Mallorca. His main aggressor, a 21-year-old Spaniard, suspected him of having a romantic relationship with his girlfriend, and attacked him by kicking him in the head, causing him serious brain injuries. He was found unconscious on the ground and transferred to the Son Espases hospital where he died on November 26, recalls Diario de Mallorca.

"I was called to inform me that he was in the hospital. The doctor told us that he had deep brain injuries and that he had to undergo emergency surgery," says Hafid, the victim’s brother. A month later, he was operated on again for clots. After spending a few weeks in intensive care, he was placed under observation. "He woke up and we had good hope. But he never spoke another word. We spent four months like that. The whole family suffered a lot," Hafid said.

Originally from Taourirt, the young man had been living for years in Majorca with his parents and four brothers and sisters, three boys and one girl. He did not work, as he suffered from chronic kidney failure that forced him to undergo dialysis sessions. His main aggressor, Christian N., accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in to the police a week after the incident. He is being prosecuted for the offense of serious assault and battery. He pleaded guilty and was placed in pre-trial detention.
