McDonald’s Manager Accused of Discriminating Against Moroccan Children in Spanish Enclave
Tuesday 5 November 2019, by
At McDonald’s in Melilla, Moroccan minors are unwelcome. They were simply sent away from this establishment, even though they were brought there by a mediator and teacher who works at Médecins du Monde.
Wanting to treat these students at the end of her class on Wednesday, Nur Houda stopped at McDonald’s with three of them for whom she had placed orders. However, as the children were eagerly waiting to enjoy their meal, they will be "thrown out" by the manager after enduring "degrading remarks" from him.
Having observed the scene from afar, Nur, who had gone to the cashier in the meantime to pay the bill, confronts the manager. "The children cannot eat here. I’m sorry, you’ll have to take it away." The height of it, he doesn’t even allow the children to sit on the terrace, because "they are criminals," he insists.
Outraged, the mediator refuses to take the food, on condition that she can eat with these Moroccan minor and orphaned children who accompany her. However, the manager of the premises did not want to hear reason and sent them away. But before that, Nur recorded the altercation that she posted on WhatsApp. This audio file went viral in less than 24 hours, sparking the outrage of many people who condemned the manager’s reprehensible behavior at McDonald’s.
Celsa Andrés, vice-president of Médecins du Monde, strongly condemned the treatment inflicted on the children, without however excluding the initiation of legal action against McDonald’s. "We think it’s a shame and another example of the xenophobia experienced in these places and the racism towards these children, who are also orphans and are in a vulnerable situation."
For this Médecins du Monde official, these children need "love, protection and support". According to him, Médecins du Monde has officially requested a public apology from McDonald’s for having "humiliated, mistreated and expelled these children from an establishment."
