Moroccan Mother Arrested in Melilla for Abandoning Young Children at Police Station

A 39-year-old woman of Moroccan origin was arrested by the police in Melilla, after abandoning her two children near the headquarters of the local police. They, aged 6 and 11, were admitted to a reception center as Unaccompanied Foreign Minors (MENA).
The facts date back to August 2, 2019, according to the police spokesman. According to him, "agents of the Minors Group (Grumen) were commissioned near the headquarters of the local police to deal with a possible crime, committed by a woman who had left her children near the headquarters, so that they could be received in a children’s center in the Spanish city", reports lavanguardia.com.
Aged 6 and 11, they were "homeless" in the autonomous city and had to be welcomed at the La Purísima Concepción Children’s Center. Later, once identified, the mother to whom the Grumen agents notified the "crime of violation of her family obligations", simply stated that she had no means or financial resources and that she would not take care of the children.
According to the police spokesman, this practice, which is recurrent, is "usual on the part of parents", while it implies a criminal offense of child abandonment, as well as a violation of family obligations.
Regarding the mother of the children, she was transferred to the police headquarters, where she was placed in custody, pending her appearance in court, the police said.
