The world’s leading producer, Spain multiplies its purchases of Moroccan olive oil by 90
Spain spent nearly 58 million euros purchasing Moroccan olive oil in the first half of 2026, compared with just 641,000 euros a year earlier. A spectacular surge in a country that nevertheless comfortably dominates global production.
Between January and June, the value of Spanish purchases of olive oil from Morocco increased approximately 90-fold. In other words, every euro spent in the first half of 2025 became nearly 90 euros this year.
The increase was already spectacular at the end of April. Spain had then imported 10,384.7 tonnes of Moroccan oil, compared with just 103 tonnes during the first four months of 2025. Their value had risen from 340,000 euros to 32.76 million euros.
Purchases made in May and June therefore added more than 25 million euros to Spain’s bill. The provisional statistics can be consulted in the official DataComex database, which is supplied with data from the Spanish customs authorities.

The paradox is striking. Spain remains the world’s leading producer of olive oil, with around 1.3 million tonnes expected for the 2025-2026 campaign. It also has a powerful processing, packaging and export industry.
Buying from Morocco therefore does not mean that the Spanish market is completely short of oil. These imports may supply industrial companies, the domestic market or subsequent commercial operations. Customs data do not make it possible to determine the final destination of each shipment.
A breakthrough driven by Morocco’s rebound
This surge comes after the spectacular recovery of Moroccan olive oil production. Projections from the International Olive Council indicate 160,000 tonnes for the 2025-2026 campaign, compared with just 90,000 tonnes during the previous season.
The improved harvest has put more oil on the market and strengthened Moroccan producers’ ability to export. Competitive prices have also made the product more attractive to Spanish buyers.
At the same time, Moroccan olive oil imports have collapsed. Their value fell by more than 90% during the first four months of 2026, indicating that the Kingdom is much less dependent on foreign supplies after several campaigns marked by drought.
The Spanish increase must nevertheless be viewed in context. The 2025 comparison base was exceptionally low, and the 10,384.7 tonnes already recorded at the end of April represented less than 1% of Spain’s annual production. Morocco is rapidly gaining ground, without threatening the global dominance of its neighbor.

The change in scale is nevertheless real. After purchasing less than one million euros’ worth of Moroccan oil in the first half of 2025, Spain now approaches 58 million. In just a few months, Morocco has gone from being a marginal supplier to becoming a partner that Spain’s olive-oil industry can no longer ignore.
