Morocco Olive Oil Exports Spain Surge 10000 Percent

Morocco sold significantly more olive oil to Spain at the beginning of 2026. Between January and April, Moroccan exports to the Spanish market rose from 103 tonnes to 10,384.7 tonnes, an increase of nearly 10,000% year-on-year.

In value terms, the progression is equally spectacular. Moroccan sales rose from 340,000 euros to 32.76 million euros over the same period. This jump mainly reflects the clear recovery in Moroccan production after several difficult years marked by drought.

According to data from DataComex, attached to the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Commerce, Moroccan olive oil represents only a limited share of Spanish imports. Its share rose to 7.48%, compared to 2.01% a year earlier, but it remains far from changing the balance of the Spanish market.

A Strong Increase, But Not a Turning Point

This movement is explained by a good agricultural season in Morocco. National olive oil production for the 2025-2026 season is estimated at approximately 200,000 tonnes, more than double the previous season. The competitive prices of Moroccan products and commercial advantages granted by the European Union also favored this growth.

At the same time, trade flows reversed. Spanish olive oil exports to Morocco fell sharply, dropping from 2,721 tonnes to 673.72 tonnes over the first four months of the year. Their value also declined, from 11.11 million euros to 2.44 million euros.

This development does not mean that Moroccan oil is replacing Spanish oil. Spain remains a global giant in the sector, with production and export capacity far superior. The approximately 9% decline in its production this season simply opened more room for imports.

For Morocco, this breakthrough remains a positive signal, but still limited. Moroccan olive oil is gaining ground in Spain, without becoming for now a competitor capable of weighing heavily against local production.
