Spain buys 20,000 fewer tonnes from Morocco… yet pays it 56 million euros more

Between January and May 2026, Spain imported 303,068 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables from Morocco, down 6.1% year on year.

At the same time, the value of these imports rose by 6.7%, to 890 million euros, according to data published by FEPEX, based on Spanish customs statistics.

In concrete terms, Spain bought approximately 19,700 fewer tonnes from Morocco than between January and May 2025, while spending nearly 56 million euros more.

The average value per tonne soars

This trend has sharply increased the average value of imported Moroccan products. It rose from approximately 2,584 euros per tonne during the first five months of 2025 to nearly 2,937 euros in 2026, an increase of approximately 13.6%.

This average does not correspond to a single price paid for all products: it depends in particular on the composition of imports and the volumes purchased for each category. But it shows that the decline in quantities did not lead to a decrease in Spain’s bill.

Morocco retains its position as Spain’s leading foreign supplier of fruit and vegetables by value. Its 890 million euros in sales even exceed the 725 million recorded for all suppliers from the European Union over the same period.

Overall, Spain imported 2.2 million tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables between January and May 2026, worth 2.656 billion euros. Countries outside the European Union now account for nearly 73% of this spending, with Morocco alone representing approximately one-third.
