Morocco Surpasses Rivals as Spain’s Leading Fruit and Vegetable Importer

Spanish imports of Moroccan fruits and vegetables increased by 24% in volume and 23% in value during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to updated data from the Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants in Spain (FEPEX).
Morocco has become Spain’s top supplier of fruits and vegetables, with a volume of 188,076 tonnes, valued at 481 million euros during the period. Overall, Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables reached 1,100,000 tonnes by the end of March 2025 for a total of 1.442 billion euros, representing an increase of 8% in volume and 15% in value.
According to FEPEX, Spanish imports of Moroccan fruits and vegetables increased by more than 20% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2021, with a value that reached 481 million euros compared to 311 million euros in 2021, an increase of about 54%.
Tomatoes are the main agricultural product imported by Spain from Morocco. During the period, 32,313 tonnes of Moroccan tomatoes were imported compared to 24,118 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 34%. In terms of value, these Moroccan exports reached more than 52 million euros, representing an increase of over 57%.
In second place is bell pepper, with more than 32,000 tonnes imported from Morocco, valued at more than 42 million euros, an increase of 4%, despite a 2% decrease in volume compared to the first quarter of last year. Next are green beans, with more than 19,000 tonnes, valued at 42 million euros, despite a decrease of 17% and 12% in terms of volume and value.
