Madrid Trial: Moroccan Man Faces 60 Years for Fatal Arson

The tragedy unfolded during the night of August 20, 2022. Driven by pathological jealousy after learning that his ex-partner had started a new relationship, Said E. A. carried out his death threats. According to the prosecution’s indictment, he conspired with two other individuals to set fire to the floor of the illegally occupied warehouse where the victim was staying with her partner. Trapped by the flames and the toxicity of the combustion gases, E.F.L. and Y.M. died of asphyxiation.

The trial before a popular jury opens at the Madrid Provincial Court, reports El Debate. The public prosecutor’s office has sought the maximum sentence against the main defendant, who has been jailed since September 2022. The court found the aggravating circumstances of kinship and gender-based discrimination, highlighting the sexist behavior and ongoing violence inflicted on the victim. His two accomplices, meanwhile, face 55 years in prison for double murder and arson that required the evacuation of the entire area.
