Escaped Murderer Sentenced to 25 Years for Fatal Stabbing of Neighbor in Spain

The Zaragoza court sentenced a Moroccan to 25 years in prison for stabbing his neighbor to death. The defendant, Adil Lazizi, had escaped from prison where he was serving a 21-year sentence for the murder of another woman in Madrid in 2005.
The Moroccan stabbed his victim 30 times in the night of May 30, 2022 with a 20-centimeter knife, reports 20minutos. The members of the popular jury rejected the arguments put forward by the defendant who pleaded self-defense, claiming to have reacted to an aggression from the victim with whom he said he had a romantic relationship. According to him, the neighbor would have acted this way out of jealousy towards his partner.
But the jury excluded the existence of a romantic relationship between the accused and the victim based on the testimonies of other neighbors. For the jurors, the victim had been attacked by surprise and had no possibility of defending herself. They also blame the Moroccan for inflicting "unnecessary" suffering on the victim to whom he gave thirty knife blows.
Considering the seriousness of the facts and the criminal record of the defendant, the jury considered that the 25-year prison sentence requested against him by the prosecution is "proportionate and appropriate". Consequently, the Moroccan was sentenced to 25 years in prison and to pay more than 300,000 euros in damages to the parents and siblings of the victim.
