Controversial Cable Car Project Sparks Debate in Tangier

Civil society members in Tangier are up in arms against the city’s cable car project, which is scheduled to be operational in 2024. This, for several reasons.
Several reasons underlie the rejection of the Tangier cable car project. Associations and organizations for the protection of heritage, the environment and consumer rights believe that this project cannot be realized in the city due to its geographical location and demographic characteristics.
According to them, the cable car is normally installed in mountainous areas with ravines and, most often, riverbeds, among other things, which are non-existent in Tangier, reports Al Akhbar. Other reasons cited: the area where this project is planned has a high population density and a height between the two stations below the required standard.
According to the opponents of the project, the development of a station at the "Sour El Maâgazine" (Faro square) level could distort this emblematic site of the city. They also do not approve of the timing chosen for the realization of this project. They see it as a political announcement made at the end of the term of the municipal council led by the PJD.
These organizations have also made some demands: a preliminary survey in order to involve the inhabitants of the city in the decision-making process; an environmental impact study, etc. The realization of the project is now subject to the satisfaction of these demands.
