Tangier to Launch Morocco's First Urban Cable Car System by 2024

Tangier will have an urban public transport infrastructure by cable car, by 2024. A first in Morocco.

At an extraordinary session, the Tangier municipal council unanimously approved the creation of the urban public transport service by cable car and the delegated management mode, as well as the related specifications, in addition to a partnership agreement under which the municipal council grants the Société d’aménagement pour la reconversion de la zone portuaire de Tanger ville (SAPT) the prerogative to take the necessary steps to carry out the project. According to the presentation of the SAPT, the realization of this project will be done in two phases.

The first phase concerns the two sections "Borj Nâam - Ferry Port Station - Pleasure Port Station" extending over 1.3 kilometers, with a planned commissioning in 2024, while the second includes the section "Pleasure Port Station - Faro Square Station" (700 meters), with an overall capacity of 2,000 passengers per hour. It is a symbolic and modern installation, which is part of the royal project to reconvert the port area of the city of Tangier, said Mohamed Ouanaya, CEO of the SAPT. According to him, this installation will position Tangier as one of the largest tourist cities on the northern shore of the Mediterranean.

This cable car will be the first of its kind in Morocco, he added. The SAPT has already contacted international expert firms specialized in this type of project and legal advisory firms, to determine the components of the project, as well as the management and maintenance mode to be adopted for this public transport service. The delegated management mode has been chosen for this cable car, under a contract that preserves the rights of all stakeholders in the project, the official specified. Also, he explained that the fare for this service will be aligned with the rates in force internationally, or even lower.

The first phase of the cable car project will require a budget envelope of 240 million dirhams (MDH), with a capacity of 1,000 passengers per hour, said Driss Benabad, technical director of the SAPT. An international call for tenders will be launched to select the company that will be responsible for the realization and management of the project for 30 years, he said. The official will specify that this call for tenders includes in particular the studies, the equipment and the commissioning of the system, in addition to the management and maintenance of the project components.
