9-Year-Old Moroccan Girl Drowns in Prohibited Swimming Area in Spain
A 9-year-old girl of Moroccan origin died after falling into a pond in the Archivel district of Caravaa de la Cruz (Murcia), where swimming is prohibited.
Emergency services were alerted to the girl’s fall into the pond. Patrols from the Civil Guard, local police, firefighters from the Murcia region and health workers were mobilized. Once on site, the firefighters were able to pull the unconscious girl out of the water. The health workers then tried to resuscitate her. In vain. The young girl had died, reports EFE.
The victim’s parents, of Moroccan origin, are receiving psychological support. The mayor of Caravaca, José Francisco García, said that the 9-year-old girl and her 6-year-old sister had been living with their parents for 5 years in a house near the pond. The two sisters had gone to play near the pond where swimming is prohibited, when the victim had entered the water. Not seeing her come out, her sister alerted their mother.
