Wildfires in Morocco: the Rif and Atlas classified as being at extreme risk this week

The forecast published by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre covers the period from September 10 to 16, 2026. It reports extreme conditions in the Rif and the Atlas Mountains.

Other regions of the Mediterranean basin are also affected. Extreme danger also applies to the Iberian Peninsula, the Pyrenees, most of France, certain areas of the western Balkans, southern Italy, Sicily and eastern Turkey.

A major heat anomaly expected in Morocco

The situation could remain worrying the following week. For the period from September 14 to 20, European models forecast above-average temperatures across much of Western Europe. The strongest warm anomaly is expected to cover the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco before extending toward France and southern Germany.

The forecasts also indicate a slight precipitation deficit in North Africa. The combination of high temperatures, low rainfall and dry vegetation may increase the fire risk.

At the national level, the General Directorate of Meteorology had issued a vigilance bulletin on Thursday, September 10, valid for Friday, September 11. Strong winds were notably forecast in Chefchaouen, Fahs-Anjra, Tanger-Assilah, Tétouan and M’diq-Fnideq, while several provinces were affected by a heat wave or thunderstorms.

In the High and Middle Atlas, thundery showers were also forecast for Friday. The European classification as being at extreme risk remains valid until Wednesday, September 16, and may change as meteorological data are updated.
