Scorching 47°C Heat Wave Grips Morocco: Thunderstorms and Chergui Winds Intensify Climate Crisis

The Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a weather alert bulletin for several provinces of Morocco, valid until Monday, August 18. The bulletin announces a heat wave with temperatures reaching up to 47°C, accompanied by the chergui phenomenon, as well as local thunderstorms that may include hail and gusts of wind.

The most intense heat period will affect the provinces of Tata, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Aousserd and Oued Ed-Dahab, where temperatures of 44 to 47°C are expected until Monday.

For the days of Saturday and Sunday, temperatures ranging between 43 and 47°C are expected in the provinces of Ouezzane, Larache, Kénitra, Sidi Slimane, Sidi Kacem, Fquih Ben Salah, Settat, Rehamna, Marrakech, El Kelaâ des Sraghna and Taroudant. During the same period, a second group of provinces will record temperatures between 40 and 44°C, including Tanger-Assilah, Chefchaouen, Meknès, Salé, Khouribga, Essaouira and Guelmim.

The heat wave will continue from Sunday to Monday in several provinces in the north and east, notably Fahs-Anjra, Tétouan, Al Hoceima, Oujda-Angad, Nador and Taza, with expected temperatures between 39 and 44°C.

On Monday, this episode of high temperatures (39 to 44°C) will still affect many regions of the interior of the country, including Fès, Meknès, Khénifra, Béni Mellal, Marrakech, Taroudant, as well as the provinces of Chefchaouen, Larache, Ouezzane, Taounate, and Sidi Kacem.
