Morocco heat wave: interior suffocates 41°C this weekend

Several Moroccan regions will experience intense heat this weekend with maximum temperatures reaching 41°C. Coastal areas will maintain a milder climate, before a slight overall drop in temperatures expected for the beginning of next week.

The mercury will soar over the coming days in the Oriental, the Moulouya valley and the interior of the Saharan provinces. Thermometers will display between 36 and 41°C in these highly exposed sectors. Conversely, the influence of the Atlantic Ocean will allow the coasts and the center of the country to maintain values between 25 and 32°C, while the Atlas mountain ranges will benefit from a certain coolness with 15 to 20°C maximum.

From Monday onwards, the General Directorate of Meteorology anticipates a progressive and overall decrease in heat across the country. Climatic conditions will become more stable for the rest of the week. Despite this expected drop, the atmosphere will remain decidedly summery inland, particularly during hours of strong sunshine, with the persistence of hot air over the southeast and far south.

This heat spell will be accompanied by windy phenomena in places. Fairly sustained gusts will sweep the central coastlines, the Tangier region, as well as the southern provinces. These gusts risk causing local dust storms, specifically affecting the dry and semi-desert spaces of these areas.

The sky will experience some variations depending on the regions. Low clouds will bring fog or drizzle during the night and morning on the Mediterranean coast and the northwestern Sahara. Light cloud formations and isolated showers could also develop in the afternoon over the Middle and High Atlas, without truly disrupting the overall meteorological situation.
