Tunisian Parliament President Condemns Morocco-Israel Normalization, Urges Maghreb Unity

The normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel is not to the liking of Rached Ghannouchi, President of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP), who calls for the unity of the Maghreb.
"We were shocked by Morocco’s choice to normalize its relations with Israel," he said in an interview with the Arabic-language newspaper Assabah. According to Israeli government sources, Mauritania would follow in Morocco’s footsteps, which Mr. Ghannouchi also sees in a bad light.
"We believe that it would be wiser now to work on consolidating the fraternal relations between the countries of the Arab Maghreb, which still suffer from the failure of the Maghreb unity project (...) Our region rather needs historical reconciliations and complementarity between the peoples and countries of the Arab Maghreb, and not to further stoke conflicts," said the President of the ARP.
The outgoing US President, Donald Trump, had signed a decree on December 10 recognizing the Moroccanness of the Sahara in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel. This normalization continues to provoke strong reactions.
