Algeria Warns of Risks as Morocco-Israel Ties Deepen, Minister Says

The Algerian Minister of Communication and government spokesman, Ammar Belhimer, attacked Morocco and the agreement to normalize its relations with Israel.
In an interview relayed by APS, the Algerian minister considers Morocco’s decision to restore its relations with Israel as a threat to itself. "Its risks are mainly aimed at Morocco," he said. Mr. Belhimer also welcomed the position of the "free Moroccans who are against" this decision.
Last December, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad had stated that the Morocco-Israel rapprochement and the American recognition of the kingdom’s sovereignty over Western Sahara are measures aimed "directly at Algeria". "Algeria was targeted by a climate of regional instability," he had affirmed.
Former US President Donald Trump had signed, on December 10, 2020, a decree recognizing the Moroccanness of the Sahara in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel. These decisions continue to provoke strong reactions.
