Biden Administration Likely to Uphold US Recognition of Moroccan Sahara, Says Former UN Envoy

Danny Danon, former Permanent Representative of Israel to the UN, welcomed the decision regarding the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. He is convinced that the Biden administration will support this decision.
"I think the US administration will build on this decision, as it will contribute to stability in the region. I would advise them to consider [the impact on stability] regarding future decisions," he said in an interview with Morocco World News. According to him, the US administration knows what can increase regional stability and the factors that will harm it.
The former Israeli Minister of Science, Technology and Space refrained from commenting on his country’s position on the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. However, he welcomed the signing of the trilateral declaration between Israel, Morocco and the United States in December 2020. Once observers examine the agreement between Morocco and the United States, they will understand that Israel supports Morocco’s position and its territorial integrity, he said.
Mr. Danon expressed optimism about the "normalization agreements" under the auspices of the Trump administration. "I was grateful for the US support that helped the parties come together and facilitate the agreement," said the former Israeli ambassador. According to him, this "will benefit not only Israel and Morocco, but will also bring more stability to the region."
For him, the normalization of diplomatic relations between the kingdom and the Hebrew state "was not a surprise. It required the active participation of a third party, in this case the United States," he said, recalling that his country had had cooperation with Morocco in the past without normalization.
