South Africa Urges Biden to Reverse Trump’s Stance on Western Sahara

Naledi Pandor, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, who had expressed her opposition to the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, calls on the new US President to cancel the decision of his predecessor.
During a webinar dedicated to her country’s foreign policy, Ms. Pandor stated that the decision of former US President Donald Trump regarding the recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara goes against the UN resolutions in favor of the organization of a referendum for the self-determination of the "Sahrawi" people, reports Daily Maverick.
The South African minister expects the new occupant of the White House to simply cancel this decision. Also, she called on Joe Biden to act in the direction of improving relations between the United States and African countries. An improvement that should be based on "respect" and "cooperation," Ms. Pandor specified.
Former US President Donald Trump had signed, on December 10, 2020, a decree recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for the normalization of diplomatic relations between the kingdom and Israel.
