Tricycles in Morocco: From a tool of integration to a symbol of delinquency

Tricycles intended for the underprivileged and ex-convicts are being diverted and used for criminal purposes. A worrying situation, denounced in a video that went viral on social media.

This type of tricycle has been involved in multiple kidnappings, violent thefts and drug trafficking activities, which prompted the security authorities in Casablanca to put out of action the individuals who engage in these criminal acts.

"The Tricycle has become a black spot in Moroccan society, especially in large cities, where it has become a means of deviance and commission of criminal acts such as kidnappings, thefts and violence," said Mohamed Akdid, a former security official and expert in criminal affairs, recalling that this tricycle, made available to ex-convicts by the State, "aims to facilitate their integration into Moroccan society, create small businesses for young people and open up new employment prospects".

In a statement to Al Ayam 24, Akdid added that the situation is of great concern to the authorities who are working to find viable solutions, especially after a driver of this type of tricycle recently knocked down a policeman. For his part, Ali Chaabani, a sociologist researcher, deplored the fact that these tricycles are "now assigned to everyone", in violation of the regulations and the law, and "used by drug users, which represents a danger for citizens".
