Tragic Dam Accident Claims Lives of Two Sisters in Morocco

A family outing that ends in tragedy. Two sisters aged 19 and 10 drowned on Saturday in the Smir dam near the town of M’diq, after the elder, who had just obtained her driver’s license, asked her parents to take a car ride around the dam.
Accompanied by her younger sister, the older sister got into her parents’ car for a ride, sources say, adding that a few moments later, the parents helplessly witnessed the drowning of their children after seeing the car heading towards the water-filled dam.
The parents’ attempts to save their daughters were in vain. The girls failed to open the car doors as the car gradually took on water. By the time the rescue services arrived, it was unfortunately too late. The two girls had died by drowning.
Their bodies were transferred to the Mohammed VI Regional Hospital in M’diq for the purposes of the autopsy. The competent authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the car sliding towards the dam waters. The vehicle will be recovered this Sunday and inspected, it is assured.
The incident has caused an uproar in the region. The parents, still in shock, have received messages of condolences, compassion and solidarity on social media.
