Traffic Fatalities Surge in Morocco as COVID-19 Restrictions Ease

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) communicated the statistics on traffic accidents. In the period from June 22 to 28, 2020, accidents have started to rise again after several weeks of calm imposed by covid-19.

12 people were killed. 1,499 others were injured, including 55 seriously. In total, there were 1,103 traffic accidents in urban areas during that period. Among the causes of these accidents are driver inattention, failure to yield, speeding, pedestrian inattention. Also noted are loss of control, failure to stop. The police findings also indicate failure to maintain a safe distance, changing direction without using a signal.

In addition, unauthorized lane changes, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving in the left lane, are also to be deplored. Finally, failure to comply with traffic lights, defective overtaking and driving in the wrong direction are also mentioned, the DGSN press release states.

Faced with this situation, the General Directorate of National Security has stepped up control and repression operations. In this context, 30,761 tickets were recorded. Better, 9,586 reports were submitted to the public prosecutor’s office and 21,175 transaction fines were collected. In total, 4,064 vehicles were impounded in the municipal pound, while 5,278 documents were seized and 244 vehicles were taken off the road.
