Moroccan Urban Traffic Accidents Claim 17 Lives, Injure 1,800 in One Week

During the week of October 19 to 25, 17 people died and 1,810 others were injured, including 59 seriously. These figures come from 1,376 traffic accidents that occurred in urban areas.
In a press release, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) indicated that these accidents are mainly due to driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, speeding, pedestrian inattention, failure to maintain a safe distance, changing direction without signaling, failure to stop, driving in the left lane, failure to comply with traffic lights, driving in the wrong direction, driving under the influence of alcohol and improper overtaking.
Regarding the control and repression of traffic offenses, the security services recorded 42,869 violations and drew up 12,200 reports, already submitted to the public prosecutor’s office. The DGSN also noted that 30,669 transactional fines were collected.
According to the same source, the sums collected reached 6,518,750 dirhams, and 4,749 vehicles were impounded in the municipal pound. The DGSN press release also mentions the seizure of 7,087 documents and the withdrawal from circulation of 364 vehicles.
