Toddler Mauled by Giant Rat in Neglected Housing Complex

A two-year-old child, Ismaël, was seriously injured after being attacked by a rat in his own bed, on Sunday, September 21, in an apartment in the Bois de Bléville neighborhood in Le Havre. Residents have been denouncing the presence of rodents for years, pointing to the inaction of their social housing provider.

Alerted by her son’s cries, his mother, Amel, found him with a "bloody face". The child was severely bitten on the fingers and ear, which lost its cartilage. He also has a scratch on his eye. The child was immediately hospitalized and is still in critical condition, although his condition is slowly improving. "I wouldn’t wish my worst enemy to find their child in the state I found mine in," she told BFMTV.

To confirm the origin of the injuries, the parents installed a camera in the room, which filmed the rodent. The animal, described by neighbors as being the "size of a cat", was eventually captured and killed. In the neighborhood, anger is brewing. Residents claim that the problem of rat proliferation has been going on "for more than ten years".

Traumatized, the little boy is now being followed by a child psychiatrist. His frightened parents have left their home and are temporarily living in a hotel. Faced with what they consider to be the inaction of their social housing provider, the residents of the neighborhood have launched a petition to demand a rapid and effective intervention against the rodents.
