Tangier Cracks Down: Upscale Cafes Shuttered in Sweeping Health Inspection Blitz

The authorities of the city of Tangier are conducting a large-scale control operation to ensure compliance with health standards in the city’s cafes and restaurants, at the beginning of the summer season.
Under the supervision of the Wali of the region, Younes Tazi, the operation is being carried out by a joint commission composed of members of the economic affairs service of the Wilaya of Tangier, the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA), as well as representatives of the local authorities. This control campaign led to the closure of several high-end cafes located in the Iberia district, in the city center of Tangier, on Sunday, July 6, reports Le360.
The commission made this decision after discovering expired food products, including spoiled milk and coffee, as well as other products stored under conditions that do not comply with the current health standards in these establishments. These unannounced inspection visits to several classified establishments, both on the Tangier corniche and in the city center, aim to verify their compliance with health and hygiene standards in terms of food storage and preparation.
Warnings have been issued to the managers of the establishments concerned. If they do not comply with the texts in force, their establishments will be closed until their situation is regularized. This initiative, called the "Health Standards Campaign," demonstrates the determination of the local authorities to preserve the health of consumers and strengthen confidence in the quality of the products served, especially during this summer period when many visitors flock to the city of the Strait.
Some professionals feel targeted by this operation. But the authorities have rejected these accusations, arguing that the controls concern all cafes and restaurants, without exception, including fast food establishments. The campaign should continue in order to improve the quality of services in the sector and ensure the safety of the food and drinks served.
