Mediterranean Quake Shakes Southern Spain and Morocco, Felt Across 300 Towns
An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale was recorded this Monday, July 14 at 07:13 (06:13 in Morocco). According to the measurements of the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN), it was felt across seven provinces in southern and eastern Spain, as well as in northern Morocco.
The epicenter of the phenomenon was precisely located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Cabo de Palos, facing the coast of the province of Almería. The distance from the coast was estimated at about 32 kilometers from the municipality of Níjar. The epicenter was at a shallow depth of two kilometers below sea level.
The tremor was felt in nearly 300 distinct localities. The affected area covers four Andalusian provinces (Almería, Granada, Malaga and Jaén), three provinces in the Levant region (Murcia, Alicante and Albacete), as well as the autonomous city of Melilla and therefore part of northern Morocco.
