Tangier Beach Crackdown: Illegal Vendors Removed Summer 2024

In Tangier and neighboring areas, local authorities have launched a series of operations to free beaches from illegal occupation of maritime domain. The objective is to end practices that frustrate summer visitors every year.

Several interventions have already resulted in the seizure of hundreds of chairs, tables and umbrellas installed without authorization on various beaches. Lightweight structures erected illegally have also been demolished, particularly on beaches located outside the city.

These operations concern notably Sidi Kacem, in the municipality of Gzenaya, as well as other points along the coastline around Tangier. Authorities are acting on instructions from the wilaya, which is demanding greater firmness against illegal occupation of public maritime domain.

Abuses that irritate summer visitors

Every summer, northern beaches face the same problem: groups install umbrellas, tables and chairs, then rent them to families coming to enjoy the sea. Prices can sometimes reach 100 dirhams, according to locally reported testimonies.

These practices are denounced by many vacationers, who feel they can no longer freely access public spaces. Authorities therefore want to prevent these installations from becoming a form of beach privatization.

Operations also target horse owners who offer rides or photos to summer visitors directly on the sand. Several animals are said to have been seized as part of these checks.

Campaigns are set to continue in the coming weeks, as Tangier and northern beaches prepare to welcome more vacationers. The challenge is to make the coastline cleaner, more accessible and less subject to abuses that repeat every season.
