Morocco Cracks Down on Beach Chaos: Massive Cleanup Targets Illegal Operators

In Morocco, the walis and governors are determined to put an end to the anarchy reigning on the beaches. They are carrying out large-scale operations to liberate the maritime domain.

The vast operation to liberate the beaches illegally occupied by unauthorized operators, particularly parasol renters, launched since June by the authorities is gaining momentum. It now extends to the entire northern coastline, particularly in the prefectures of Tangier, Tetouan and Fnideq, as observed by the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. This time, the walis and governors are playing the card of firmness. Yassine Jari, governor of the prefecture of M’diq-Fnideq, directly supervised the operations in sensitive areas such as Marina Smir, Restinga or along the Martil corniche. With Younes Tazi, wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region and governor of the province of Tangier-Assilah, it is zero tolerance towards anarchy on the beaches of the region.

Under the supervision of the wali, a strong operation was carried out on Monday evening by the authorities of Tangier on the beaches of Ghandouri and Malabata. It resulted in the seizure of beach equipment installed without authorization.

In the wake of the offensive against the illegal occupation of the beaches, there were pockets of resistance. Beneficiaries of the "beach trade" would have mobilized young people to demonstrate against the bans, in order to preserve the illegal revenues estimated at several million dirhams each season, generated by the wild rental of spaces on the sand. In vain. The operation was a resounding success.

These campaigns are moreover welcomed by citizens and civil actors. According to them, this approach reflects a respect for the citizen’s right to relaxation and rest without exploitation or harassment. On the web, they have called for the generalization of these campaigns nationwide, particularly on the beaches that are very crowded during the summer season, and which suffer from disorder and illegal exploitation by certain parties who take over the beaches and turn them into private spaces.
