Tanger Med: the truck was leaving for Europe with 8,000 kg of hashish

This is a record seizure that has just been made at the gates of Europe. Moroccan security services intercepted, this Thursday at the port of Tanger Med, a truck filled with more than 8 tons of cannabis resin, dealing a blow to international trafficking networks.

The vigilance of the customs officers and the DGSN has paid off. During a routine check on an internationally registered Moroccan transport truck, the agents discovered an illicit cargo carefully hidden. In total, 8 tons and 196 kg of chira (cannabis resin) were hidden inside plastic bars, a sophisticated method intended to deceive scanners and sniffer dogs.

The vehicle was about to board for a crossing to a European port. The driver, a 50-year-old Moroccan, was immediately arrested. He was taken into custody for the purposes of the investigation, supervised by the competent prosecutor’s office, in order to trace the channel and identify the sponsors of this large-scale operation.

This spectacular seizure does not come alone. It is part of a black week for drug traffickers. Last Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) had already dismantled another criminal network operating from the beaches of Casablanca, using "Go-Fast" (inflatable boats) to ship the drugs.

In the space of 48 hours, the Moroccan authorities have thus locked down the two main outlets for drugs: the maritime route via containers in the north, and the beaches of the Atlantic.
