Tanger Med Tops African Ports with Record 137 Direct Shipping Connections

Tanger Med’s performance in 2020 now positions it far ahead of other African ports. With 137 direct connections, it has become the best connected African port in 2020, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
This recognition for the Moroccan port has been endorsed in a new note, entitled "Ports in the global liner shipping network: understanding their position, connectivity and changes over time" from UNCTAD.
While Tanger Med holds the record in Africa, Shanghai (China) takes the top spot globally with 288 direct connections. Busan in South Korea aligns in 2nd place with 274 direct connections, followed by Antwerp in Belgium (268) and Rotterdam in the Netherlands (264).
According to UNCTAD, 12,748 direct port-to-port connections do not require transshipment in 2020. In detail, services are provided by a single company on 47.2% of these connections, while on 2,751 routes (21.6%), competition is observed between two providers. As for the remaining 3,980 port pairs (31.2%), three or more carriers provide container shipping services.
