Tanger Med Port Hits Record 5.7 Million Container Traffic, Surpassing Mediterranean Rivals

Before 2021, the container activity of the Tanger Med port complex will exceed the bar of 5.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled, i.e. a growth of +18% compared to 2019.

So far, the ports of the Mediterranean basin have never reached this level of traffic, the Tanger Med port authority said in a statement, stressing that the level of productivity has seen better performance this year. Thus, the bar of more than 500,000 containers handled per month has been exceeded 4 times to date in 2020, with a new performance recorded during the month of November at 553,164 TEUs processed.

The Tanger Med Port Authority announced during the Tanger Med Group Supervisory Board meeting held on December 22, other forecast port figures. With the recorded tonnage, it is likely that Tanger Med will end the year with around 80 million tons of goods handled, an increase of +23% compared to 2019. The port complex alone handles nearly half of all port tonnages in Morocco. In addition, the level of TIR truck traffic has remained stable compared to 2019, despite the shutdown of some industrial activities and the general slowdown in economic activity. This sector will therefore be able to end the year 2020 with nearly 350,000 TIR units, the same source stressed.

Moreover, Tanger Med confirms its determination with powerful port hubs such as Singapore, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Long Beach and others, to ensure the continuity of global logistics chains, it is further stated.
